Those booked in for teeth whitening in London should stop smoking before the procedure, an expert has advised.
Dr Michael Apa is a dentist in the US and suggested quitting the cigs can make a difference to one’s smile.
A smoker on one pack a day can experience teeth discolouration and lose a couple of gnashers over ten years, he warned, citing Academy of General Dentistry claims.
Therefore, before a teeth whitening procedure, patients should consider what lifestyle changes they can make to improve their grin.
"The external causes of an aging smile are determined by health and lifestyle decisions you make everyday," Dr Apa added.
Another tip given was to avoid food and drinks that can cause discolouration. These generally cover dark products such as red wine, coffee, ketchup and chocolate.
In addition, use a good quality toothbrush that is less than three months old. Those with gum disease should change theirs every four to six weeks, he recommended.
Celebrities recently reported to have undergone cosmetic dentistry include Louis Walsh and Danielle Bux.
