Flossing teeth regularly is important to not only prevent the need for cosmetic dentistry, but as one specialist has warned, for overall health also.
Dr Mehmet Oz explained that if people only use a toothbrush, they will often be merely cleaning the exterior of their teeth, MSN reports.
Instead, he recommended individuals use dental floss to thoroughly clean the mouth and remove any remaining bacteria that has been missed.
“No matter how thoroughly or long you brush your teeth, you’re missing a good portion of their total surface,” Dr Oz said.
The doctor cautioned that poor oral hygiene can increase a person’s risk of developing heart disease, a theory which has been supported by recent studies into the condition.
Research by Professor Richard Watt from University College London found a connection between lifestyle habits and the likelihood of developing cardiovascular problems and he noted in particular a significant link with dental health.
