If people want a natural way to relax before a cosmetic dentistry procedure, they could look to natural oils.
Pauline Allen, chief executive at the International Federation of Aromatherapists (IFA), explained aromatherapy treatments are becoming increasingly important for health.
She added a growing number of medical professionals were using complementary therapies for their patients.
"Aromatherapy is used greatly in the palliative care section," Ms Allen stated.
"It is becoming a necessity for health."
Before a cosmetic dentistry treatment – such as dental veneers – patients may like to dab a few drops of some of the following oils on their wrists and temples, as well as receiving the advised anaesthetic from their dentist.
Bergamot and lavender are known for their relaxing and painkilling qualities, while lemongrass, melissa and citronella are both sedating and antiseptic.
Last month, the Olympia Beauty show took place at the Grand Hall, Olympia, London. The IFA attended the event to promote the benefits of aromatherapy to the public.
