Adults will be reminded of the importance of dental care throughout September as part of Colgate Oral Health Month.
In a change from recent years, the focus will be directed at the older population rather than on good tooth hygiene among children.
Dr Tony Jenner, a specialist in dental public health and the immediate past deputy chief dental officer for England, explained how avoiding the need for emergency dentistry is vital.
“As we keep our teeth for longer, root caries also has the potential to become a serious problem that is difficult to treat.”
He referred to the 1998 National Dental Health Survey that revealed more than half the adult population had tooth problems due to decay becoming increasingly more common.
News publication Black Hills Today recently quoted Dr John Bridges as stating the need for individuals to have regular check-ups, even if their mouths appear healthy, to ensure there are no underlying issues.
