Not brushing teeth often enough ‘could result in emergency dentistry’

Inconsistent brushing could result in a need for emergency dentistry. People who do not brush their teeth properly could eventually need emergency dentistry due to the damaging effects of tartar.

Oral health products provider Eludril and Elgydium warned that even going to bed without sufficient brushing once or twice a week could cause long-term damage, as bacteria can grow in the mouth quickly.

"The main culprit is dental plaque which is a biofilm, usually colourless, that develops on our teeth," the company said.

Although it can be brushed away, it will harden within 48 hours to become tartar, which is much harder to get rid of.

Furthermore, the bacteria in this substance could cause health problems such as heart disease.

In order to avoid emergency dentistry, Eludril and Elgydium recommended brushing twice a day for two minutes at a time, flossing and visiting a dentist on a regular basis to spot and treat gum disease.

According to Colgate, the best way to floss and prevent emergency dentistry is by using about 18 inches of floss and following the curves of the teeth, making sure to clean beneath the gumline but taking care to avoid snapping it.
