Heart attack risk reiterated to people who neglect teeth

Heart attacks and emergency dentistry could be the result of neglecting teeth. People who neglect their teeth may not only be increasing their risk of needing emergency dentistry, but they may be more likely to suffer from a heart attack or stroke.

DentistryIQ.com cited a new study which shows that those who brush, floss and see an oral healthcare professional regularly may cut their risk of such serious conditions by as much as 33 per cent.

This follows previous research from the University of Bristol which also suggested that failing to implement a good regime of looking after teeth and gums could cause heart attacks.

It is due to Streptococcus bacteria – the same type that cause plaque on the teeth – that can build up in the mouth and then enter the bloodstream, potentially causing clots.

"Brush (two minutes) and floss daily to keep dental plaque from moving in. Be on the lookout for early signs of gum disease. And visit your dentist every six months," DentistryIQ.com urged.
