Tooth implants can be a more effective option than root canals for people suffering from gum disease, bone loss or decay, it has been asserted.
Speaking on behalf of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID), Dr John Minichetti noted there is no need to undergo numerous periodontic or endodontic procedures.
As well as being costly, he pointed out the process can be painful for patients.
From both a cosmetic and oral health perspective, preserving problematic teeth is not the most ideal choice, Dr Minichetti stated.
"Patients expect restorative dental procedures to make their smiles more attractive and long-lasting," he said.
"Implants deliver the best results, as the ultimate goal is to achieve an aesthetic and functional restoration for years to come."
The AAID pointed out patients of most ages can undergo the procedure, adding it should always be considered as an option to replace missing or failing teeth.
Compared to bridgework and endodontic treatment, dental implants are considered more predictable, according to the organisation.
