A broken molar will most certainly need immediate dental treatment. The molars are the thicker teeth at the back of the mouth. These are the main chewing surfaces and, therefore, come under significant pressure and strain in day to day life. Although the molars are very strong and robust, sometimes they can give way to the stress, and a breakage can occur. There are many different types of breaks that a tooth can suffer, for example, cracks, splits, chips etc. All of which will need slightly different treatment.

They always do their very best to help you immediately with whatever the problem may be. It is also extremely helpful to be able to go to see them out of normal working hours. Thank you!”

What to do about a broken molar

The first thing you should do is call a dentist and explain to them that you have a broken molar. If it is out of hours, or you are unable to get an appointment at your own dentist, then an emergency dentist may be needed. If a large piece of the tooth has broken away then try to save it, if you can. Keep this in a clean container of milk to preserve it. The dentist may be able to repair the tooth using the broken piece. Also, avoid eating on that side if possible until the dentist has assessed the area. When you arrive at the clinic the dentist can take a look and recommend an appropriate course of treatment. The severity of the breakage will dictate what treatment needs to be given. This could be anything from a filling, to a root canal treatment, crown, or extraction (as a last resort). The important thing is not to panic and seek advice and treatment as soon as you can.
