Tooth InfectionsTooth infections can go unnoticed for many months unless you attend regular check-ups with your dentist.

Often pain does not develop straight away and this is why it can be hard to know it is there. However, dental professionals are trained to look for subtle signs and perform x-rays to confirm the presence of infection. Alternatively, if you yourself notice any pain or discomfort then always speak to your dentist immediately.

Tooth Infections

The two most common issues that can arise from a tooth infection are either the need for a root canal procedure or treatment for a dental abscess.

Abscess

This is when fluid and pus gathers inside the root of the tooth, in the gum, or in the jawbone. Each one can be very serious if left untreated. Dental abscesses can, in severe cases, cause blood poisoning and other life-threatening issues.

Root Canal Infection

If the root of the tooth becomes exposed then a root canal infection forms. This infects the roots and nerves of the tooth. When this happens only a specialised root canal treatment will clear away the infection.

Symptoms of a tooth infection

  • Pain and sensitivity, especially when eating (a root canal infection).
  • Severe throbbing pain (a severe toothache) that spreads to the jaw, cheek, neck, or ear (a dental abscess).
  • A high temperature, a fever, or generally feeling unwell.
  • Swelling in the face as well as the neck.
  • Swollen or tender lymph glands in the neck and under the jaw.
  • A sudden release of fluid or liquid (a dental abscess).
  • An unpleasant taste in the mouth or bad breath.

If you have any of these symptoms then it is extremely important that you seek emergency dental advice as soon as possible. The sooner the issue is treated the better the outcome will be.

If you have a dental emergency and are in need of urgent treatment please call the clinic on 0208 547 9997 . You can also book online or via email. In addition to this, we provide a convenient dental emergency walk-in service for new or existing patients.
