Do You Need to See the Specialist Periodontist?

The question – in other words – is: Do you have gum disease?

Just less than half of adults in the UK grapple with gum disease or gingivitis. Many people may experience symptoms of gum disease, but not realise that they have this disease. It is probably one of the least understood diseases. If left untreated, it can have a significant impact on your overall health and quality of life. The positive news is that, when detected early, gum disease is manageable. This is one of the reasons you should attend regular hygiene and check-up appointments.

There are various types and stages of periodontal disease. Symptoms may include red, swollen, tender or bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, receding gums, loosening of teeth, alterations in your bite, and the formation of gaps and spaces between your teeth.

We should recognise these symptoms early on, and it is imperative that we do not overlook them.

What is Periodontics?

Dr. Sonum Patel

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with gum disease. Healthy gums are the foundation of good oral health. Why not watch some videos before contacting us for a face to face discussion.

Meet Our Specialist Periodontist

Dr Sonum is officially registered on the Specialist list as a Periodontist. She routinely manages complex periodontal cases. Sonum has gained invaluable insight into surgery and management of complex cases in a hospital environment. Whether you are dealing with gum disease, gum recession, or other periodontal issues, she is dedicated to providing patients with the best possible care.

Our Range of Periodontal Treatments

The initial phase of periodontal treatment is the consultation appointment, a critical step for the overall success of any treatment. It is imperative to your treatment that we establish the severity and extent of the disease from the outset. Our periodontist carefully measures the position of the gums and determines whether or not spaces have developed between the gums and the teeth. These spaces are called pockets and measuring their depth is the starting point of your treatment.

We also take xrays to visualise the position and height of the supporting bone around the teeth. Once all these data is collected, we can discuss your options and print out a comprehensive treatment plan for you. This will also be your opportunity to pose any questions or concerns you may have regarding your treatment. The aim of this appointment is for you to be be well-informed about your periodontal condition, possess a clear understanding of the proposed treatment, and be aware of the likelihood of treatment success.

Treatment by the Specialist Periodontist can take any of these forms:

1- Gum Disease Treatment

  • Early diagnosis and intervention are key to preventing further damage and preserving your oral health.

2- Gum Grafting

  • For patients with receding gums, our periodontist can perform gum grafting procedures to restore the aesthetics and health of your smile.

3- Dental Implants

  • Dental implants are often the best solution for replacing missing teeth. Our periodontist has extensive experience in implant placement, ensuring a secure and natural-looking result.

4- Tooth Scaling and Root Planning

  • This deep cleaning procedure is effective at removing plaque and tartar build-up from below the gum-line. It is a crucial step in treating gum disease.

5- Crown Lengthening

  • Crown lengthening can improve the appearance of your smile by reshaping excess gum tissue.

6- Frenectomy

  • Sometimes, an overly tight or misplaced frenulum (the tissue that connects the lip or tongue to the gum) can cause speech difficulties or orthodontic problems. We provide laser frenectomy procedures to correct this.
