Repairing chipped teeth can be performed purely for cosmetic reasons or for structural reasons too. Some chips can be merely superficial and others may need repairing to ensure that the tooth remains healthy and strong. There are different ways a dentist can repair a chipped tooth. The most common treatment, if the tooth is in good health, is composite bonding. The cosmetic dentist will match the composite material to the tone of the patient’s tooth and then sculpt it onto the affected area. However, if the damage has penetrated the inside of the tooth canal then additional treatment, in the form of root canal therapy, is needed before the tooth can be repaired. This is to clear out infection. Once the tooth is infection-free it can either be repaired using a composite bonding treatment or be fitted with a dental crown.
