How To Treat An Abscess

A trained dentist can talk you through how to treat an abscess. Many people make the mistake of thinking that an abscess will heal itself. However, this is certainly not the case. An abscess can actually cause very serious complications if left untreated.

What is an abscess?

A dental abscess is caused by a build-up of pus caused by bacteria. This can be inside a tooth, in the bone, or in the gums. When an abscess forms in the tooth it is known as a periapical abscess. In the gum, it is known as a periodontal abscess. Both can be serious, and extremely painful. If left untreated an abscess could spread to different parts of the body and make people very ill indeed. In the most extreme cases, it can cause abscesses in the brain and lead to a coma.

How to treat an abscess

Despite an array of information available on the internet on how to treat an abscess at home, it still requires immediate attention by a trained professional. This may involve:

  • A root canal treatment being performed to remove an abscess from the root of the tooth. This will remove the infection. The tooth is then sealed with a filling to protect it from further bacteria and infection. If this is not successful then the tooth may need to be extracted as a last resort.
  • If the dentist thinks that the infection may have spread they may prescribe antibiotics. However, these will only be given if they are absolutely necessary.
  • An abscess in the gum will most likely require an incision making and the pus draining away. This, however, is usually only a temporary measure, meaning further treatment and monitoring will be needed.
