Teeth can sometimes lose bone and gum support as a result of gum disease. This can lead to progressive loosening of the tooth and eventual loss of the tooth if the gum disease is not treated.
At Pearl Dental Clinic, we take gum disease very seriously and every patient undergoing a full examination is provided with gum assessment to determine if any gum disease exists.
If active gum disease exists, we usually recommend sessions of deep cleaning (Advanced gum treatment) with either our hygienist, dentists or our Periodontist (specialist in gum treatment) so that the bacteria can be removed from the tooth and root surface under Local Anaesthetic if necessary.
We also would assess your daily cleaning methods and recommend any changes that would be necessary in order to make your daily cleaning more effective in removing plaque.
Sometimes other factors such as genetics, smoking or diabetes may also be contributing to the worsening gum condition and we would inform you if you need to make any changes to improve your gum condition.
Occasionally with very advanced gum disease, we may recommend gum surgery after deep cleaning gum treatment. However we will discuss the pros and cons of gum surgery with you first and if you wish we could also provide you with alternative treatments to gum surgery.
Once the course of deep gum treatment is completed, you will usually be asked to come back for three monthly hygiene maintenance appointments. If you wish, you can join our Practice membership plan and enjoy the many benefits of joining our practice plan such as regular checkups and hygiene appointments, special offers and 10% discount off the cost of your dental treatment.
