IV sedation during pregnancy

Hello

I am 22 weeks pregnant and unfortunately one of my teeth at the back broke down last week and I think I will need a new filling or a cap for this tooth.

In the past, I have only had dental treatment under sedation due to my anxieties when it comes to having injections and drilling on my teeth.

Could I have IV sedation whilst I am pregnant? If I can't have IV sedation, what could I have instead? I really cant have the injection without some sort of sedation, please help.

Thank you for your question.

It is advisable to minimize the treatment needed during pregnancy. In most of the cases a conditions is stabilised until the end of the pregnancy. In your case it may be enough just to temporise the broken section and protect it with a simple restoration and without any injection. Once the baby is born then you can complete the treatment under sedation. You really need to be assessed clinically to see what can be done that is simple and stabilise the tooth.
