Elderly father & deep sedation

So my 75-year-old father has some major dental work coming up (namely, root canals) He's absolutely PETRIFIED of the dentist and is insisting that he receive a deep sedation of some type. Is it safe for a man of that age to receive that type of treatment?

Sedation of elderly patients involves additional risks that are associated with age and coexisting illness. There is a possibility of complications which can arise from chronic illness such as chronic lung disease or heart failure. An accurate medical history of elderly patients will be taken before sedation is planned. Elderly patients require a reduced dosage of sedation.
