Thumbs up IV Sedation & Asthma

I am a very nervous patient who has not seen a dentist for almost 9 years. I can see that I need some fillings because some of my lower set teeth have become sensitive.

My problem is that I know I cant have any dental work without sedation but also I have found out that I cant be sedated because I am asthmatic. I have had asthma since childhood and its under control. Can I have IV sedation or is that not recommended for me?

Thumbs up IV sedation & Asthma

    Hi Sophie

I think that if your asthma is mild and well controlled, there should not be any problems with having IV sedation. The sedation should be carried out by an experienced specialist anaesthetist and with a constant oxygen supply.

It would be best to see the anaesthetist for a pre-op assessment to make sure that he/she assesses your suitability for IV sedation.
