Hi
I have terrible teeth caused by years of fearing the dentist and dental treatment and as a result I have stayed away from having dental work done. I have so far managed to take painkillers and antibiotics whenever I had dental infections and kept myself away from the dentist. However on the last occasion my face swelled up and I had a swelling for almost a week and had to take a lot of antibiotics and could hardly eat anything because I was unable to open my mouth very wide. I know that I cant have any dental treatment being awake and really would like to be put to sleep when I am having my dental work carried out. My own dentist says that he can refer me to the hospital but they will only remove teeth and to have my teeth fixed, I would need to have sedation. Is it possible with IV sedation to have so much of it that I am put to sleep with that and not be aware of anything that is being done to my teeth? |

Thank you for your post.
Putting people to sleep so that they become unconscious is general anaesthetic and general dentistry is rarely done these days under General anaesthetic. However it is possible to put people to sleep with sedation and for the patient to still be conscious and breathing for themselves using multiple sedation drugs. This type of deep sedation has to be done carefully by a specialist anaesthetist and in a safe manner taking care of the patients breathing and oxygen saturation at all times. If you wish to have deep sedation, please call our reception team on 0208 547 9997 and book a sedation consultation.
