Unhappy What antibiotic for an infected root canal filling?

    Hello

I have an infected tooth which was root canal filled two years ago and recently it began to hurt almost non-stop daily. I have tried to get rid of the pain by taking pain killers but the pain still persists.

Could you tell me what antibiotics I will need for my infected root canal filling? Could I pick up the antibiotics or prescription without seeing the dentist? I know that my tooth is infected and so it might be quicker just to take the antibiotics rather than see the dentist first. Please advise.

Default What antibiotic for an infected root canal filling?

    Hi,

    Thank you for your question.

No it is not advisable just to take antibiotics without having your tooth examined by a dentist even if you are sure that the cause of pain is with the infected tooth that have had root canal treatment few years earlier.
The best antibiotics for these infections is usually anaerobic like metronidazole and you must see your dentist for a prescription.

    Respected Sir,
Though I don't think I'll suffice your questions as sir has already done; I'd like to say just a few words -- I am a third year student of dentistry.
Sir is very true in his answer. Pulp is a vital tissue and normally should not be exposed to the environment. But chances of proliferation of aerobic microbes can never be neglected, however it's quite possible that it'd be very hard to survive for them in such anaerobic environment.
But, as you have mentioned earlier, I guess the pain is due to exposure of pulp.
    Better see a dentist soon.
And never ever try to take drugs on your own.
    Take care.
    Regards.
