Root canal questions

Hello

I have a broken down tooth that my dentist says needs to be root canal treated because it has a lot of decay which has gone very deep into the tooth.

I would like to ask you a few questions regarding root canal treatment just so that I am clear exactly what is involved in the procedure.

Am I likely to have any pain during or after the root canal procedure? How long does the whole procedure take? Would I need to be sedated for root canal treatment? Do I need to take any time off work afterwards? How long do root canal treated teeth last?

You should not have any pain during root canal treatment, you may have some discomfort after root canal treatment which may mean you will need painkillers to control the pain.

The root canal procedure takes around 1 hour - 2 hours depending on the tooth and the complexity of the canal anatomy. You don't normally need to take any time off work afterwards. On average 70-90% of root canals last at least 5 years.
