    Arrow tooth snapped off

    Hello

My front tooth recently snapped off at the gum level and on visiting my dentist he told me that I need to have the tooth root canal filled so that I can have a crown with a hook put on that tooth. As a temporary measure he put some white filling on the tooth but said this wont last long. I don't have any pain from this tooth whatsoever and wonder if a root canal is really necessary? My understanding is that root canal is necessary if a tooth is causing pain and not for holding crowns. please advise.

    Thank you.

    Talking Tooth snapped off

Root canal treatment can become necessary even if the tooth has no symptoms. In cases when a tooth has lost vitality or needs a post for retention of a crown, root canal treatment can become necessary even with lack of any symptoms.

If your tooth has snapped off at the gum level, its going to be very difficult to provide any retention for a crown without a post. A post needs to be inserted into the root canal and without a root canal filling, a post can not be placed there as it will cause infection.
