    Arrow NHS root canal filling

    Hi

I had a root canal filling done by my NHS dentist around 6 months ago on my top molar tooth. The tooth has been hurting on and off for the past few months whenever I put any pressure on it during eating.

Recently I saw my dentist again and he recommended that I have a crown placed on top of the tooth to stop it from breaking down. However I am worried that the tooth has not fully settled down yet and might cause problems for me after the crown is fitted.

I read on the internet that a root canal filling that still hurts after a few months, might have failed and might need to be redone. Is this the case?

Is it normal for a root filled tooth to be still hurting six months after the root canal filling is done? Do you think I should have this tooth capped at this point or wait longer to see if the pain stops?

    Lightbulb NHS root canal filling

Thank you for your post. Your tooth will need to be checked clinically to see if there are any signs of root canal failure such as a non-healing apical infection, pus draining sinus, tooth fracture, mobility as well as symptoms.

Without seeing your tooth I cant declare your root canal treatment a success or failure but obviously having symptoms 6 months after root canal treatment is completed is a concern. You should either come to see us or see another dentist for a second opinion if you have any concerns about your root treatment and your tooths suitability for a crown.
