    Lightbulb Orthodontic retainers

I had orthodontics on my teeth 10 years ago. I am now 25 years old and I have been wearing these current retainers ever since my orthodontic treatment finished. I have been wearing my orthodontic retainers a couple of times a week as per the orthodontists recommendations.

The orthodontist recommended that I wear the retainers to keep my teeth in their position and stop them from moving again. I have tried my best to stick to his advice and tried to wear the retainers regularly.

What I want to know is when can I eventually stop wearing the retainers? as I'm getting tired of wearing them now. Also can I get a new set of retainers from you, as my current set is now very old and stained?

    Smile Orthodontic retainers

    Hello Roderik,

    Thank you for your post.

I am glad you have followed the advise of your orthodontist and have been wearing the orthondontic retainers part-time since the completion of the treatment. If you had not worn any retainers your teeth would have partially or completely moved back to there original position.

Retention is for life and you should continue wearing your retainers for 3 to 5 nights a week. This will minimise the risk of any relapse. Orthodontic retainers need to be replaced every 2 to 5 years depending on wear and tear. If your current set is very old and stained you should have new ones made as the health of your mouth can become compromised.

We would need to see you for an assessment and discuss the types of retainers possible. Please contact the practise and book a check-up.
