Treatment for gum disease

I have been told I have gum disease and need to get treatment for gum disease. My teeth bleed on brushing and plaque builds up around my teeth very easily. I’m 35 years old and have never had any such work done on my teeth before.

Other people in my family who are older than myself who also suffer from gum disease, have lost teeth due to gum problems and some of them are now wearing dentures.

Could you please explain to me what the cause of gum disease is? What exactly does the treatment for gum disease involves? Will I be cured of gum disease once I have the treatment done?
