how long does a crown last?

Hi

I have a deep filling on my lower back tooth that over the last 2 years, it has broken three times and now my dentist says that the best thing for this tooth would be to have a dental crown.

After the experience of this filling, I am worried that the crown will keep breaking and leave me with big dental bills every time. I mean he is asking for £700 for a crown and if it only lasts 2 years, I don't think it would be worth it.

How long does a crown last? Would it last longer than the filling, roughly how long could I expect the crown to last?

You dentist is correct to say that teeth with large restorations need cuspal coverage or in other words a crown.
It is expected a crown to last on average between 7-10 years but this is largely affected by the way you look after it and maintain it. I have seen crowns to last more then 25 years and in some rare cases that they have only lasted couple of years. This is not the crown that has not lasted it is that the tooth under has been affected by decay due to poor oral hygiene and high sugar diet. So largely how long your crown last depends on how good you look after it. In general in some practices, crowns have a guarantee of 1 year like in our clinic.
