    Question Wisdom tooth swelling

My 18 year old daughter has a wisdom tooth swelling. She also has red and sore gums and is in a fair bit of pain.

Her wisdom tooth plays up every now and then, particularly around her exam time. She has taken antibiotics with almost no success.

Should she see the dentist and have all her wisdom teeth taken out. Are wisdom teeth extractions normally done under General Anaesthetic?

    Arrow Wisdom tooth swelling

    Thank you for your post.

We follow the NICE (National Institue of Clinical Excellence) guidelines on extraction of wisdom teeth.

A wisdom tooth that is causing repeated episodes of infection, is a candidate for extraction but we would need to examine your daughters tooth to see if she needs to have her wisdom tooth removed. Wisdom tooth extractions are normally done under local anaethetic +/- IV sedation.
