Hairline fractured tooth

I have a molar tooth which recently fractured whilst I was eating a baguette. My dentist says that the tooth has a hairline fracture and no bits of the tooth have yet separated from my tooth.

My dentist has recommended a crown for this tooth but I am worried that the crown will not work and my fractured tooth will end up having to come out. If it has to come out, I will have a problem chewing on that side.

I would like to know what can happen with a hairline fracture on a tooth? What is the prognosis for my tooth and what sort of treatments will my tooth need?

The prognosis for this tooth depends on the extent of the hairline fracture. It would be difficult to say what the prognosis would be without seeing the tooth.

Sounds like that the crown treatment that your dentist has suggested is correct, I would do the same. If the pain settles down then thats great. If it does not then you may have to look at possible root canal treatment.
