Swelling after Wisdom tooth extraction

Dear Dentist

I had my impacted wisdom tooth removed last friday and the procedure was fine and I had no pain that day. However from the next day and over the last few days my face has swelled up and the area has become very painful now.

Is this is a normal reaction or should I be doing something about it?

During extraction of impacted wisdom teeth sometimes the bone around the tooth is removed to allow the tooth to be delivered. This creates inflammation and swelling which can go on for a few days.

Starting 24 hours after the extraction, its important that you keep the area very clean with good oral hygiene and use a chlorhexidine mouthwash or salt water for about a week to minimize the risk of local infection developing.

If you have any concerns about the swelling you will need to see the emergency dentist ASAP as minor swelling is to be expected but more severe swelling needs further investigation. You may need strong antibiotics if the surgical area has become infected.
