Should a dental implant be put in as soon as my tooth is extracted?

Hi

I have a molar tooth that is broken down and has been broken for a few months. My dentist says that its really decayed and should be extracted and replaced with an implant after 2 months.

Another dentist that I saw recently, said that he could pull the tooth and place an implant immediately. I am not sure if I should have the implant placed immediately or wait 2 months before having an implant. What would be your recommendation for my case?

Different dentist have different approach to the issue you have raised. So I think the best way to respond to your question by telling you what we do in our clinic.

At Pearl Dental Clinic almost all of the implants or 99.9% of them are placed at least 6-8 weeks after tooth extraction. This is because at this time, as histological studies has shown, bone has the highest activity and turnover in bone so it is the ideal time to maximize the oseointegration of implant. In very rare case and in the aesthetic zone we might be able to consider immediate placement after extraction of the tooth but these are rare in our clinic as we want to ensure that what we do is 100% tested and give our patient the best chance of success with best outcome.
