    Question Bio-oss bone graft

    Hi

I had an implant consultation last week and was told that I need a Bioss bone graft around my dental implant. I would like to know from what material is the Bio-oss bone graft made from and what is the point of doing a Bioss bone graft? Surely my own bone would be better as a bone grafting material.

Is the Bio oss bone graft procedure going to cause any pain and how quickly will I recover from the bone grafting procedure?

    Arrow Bio-Oss bone graft

As a bone graft material, we could use your own bone or a bone substitute such as Bio-Oss. Using your own bone sometimes means opening another site surgically and harvesting bone from there which may result in bleeding, swelling and possible pain afterwards. In small bony defects, its sometimes better to avoid these problems by using Bio-Oss and mixing it with patients own bone.

Bio-Oss made by Geistlich is a natural, osteoconductive bone substitute that promotes bone growth in periodontal and maxillofacial osseous defects.

It consists of the mineral portion of bovine bone. Bio-Oss provides the body with a matrix for bone cell migration and is integrated into the natural physiologic remodelling process.

Bio-Oss natural bone mineral offers predictable results which have been proven through years of clinical experience and extensively documented in published scientific literature.

Bio-Oss acts as a scaffolding for your own bone cells to grow into and produce new bone in a bony defect. Once enough bone is produced, a dental implant could then be placed in that site.

Bio-Oss bone grafting does not usually cause much pain and most patients can go back to their normal business within a day or two after the procedure.
