    Arrow Bioguide membrane

    Hi

I have seen on your implant gallery that you have used bioguide membrane for some of your dental implant patients. Can you tell me what is the purpose of the bioguide membrane and from what material is the membrane derived from?

It says on your site that the bio-guide membrane resorbs eventually. Can you tell me how long it takes before it resorbs away?

    Post Bioguide membrane

    Thank you for your post.

Bio-Gide membrane made by Geistlich consists of a highly purified collagen types I and III which is of porcine (pig) origin.

The membrane is highly biocompatible and supports wound healing very well indeed. The three-dimensional, natural fiber structure promotes cell adhesion and thus serves as a matrix for soft tissue support and provides a barrier to the in-growth of the overlying gum soft tissue into underlying bony defects.

This is important because when one has carried out bone grafting, we need to protect the underlying bony defect from in-growth of soft tissue for bone to grow in the bony defect instead.

Experience shows that when the Bio-Gide membrane is used, there is low risk of post-operative membrane exposure. Should wound dehiscence occur, soft tissue healing and closure of the dehiscence defect usually follows.

The barrier function of the Bio-Gide membrane usually lasts for several months prohibiting soft tissue in-growth into the bony defect and facilitating undisturbed bone regeneration. Resorption of the membrane takes place enzymatically and without irritation of the soft or hard tissues around the membrane.

Some scholars argue that Bone grafting without membrane placement is unlikely to work successfully and that is why we always place a membrane around a bone grafted site.
