What does bone grafting entail?

I have been told by my dentist that I need to have bone grafting carried out before I have any dental implants. I need two dental implants at the top front jaw and three teeth on top of them. He mentioned that the bone will have to be removed from my chin or somewhere similar on my top or bottom jaws. I read that its also possible to have artificial bone grafts and I think I would prefer artificial bone to be used if thats possible. What does bone grafting entail? What types of bone grafts are available for my case and how long does the treatment take from start to finish?

Bone grafts can be bone taken from yourself, from a human cadaver, artificial bone or bovine based bone. Each bone graft type has certain advantages and disadvantages and works best in certain clinical situations.

Bone grafting can sometimes be done at the same time as implant placement and on other occasions it needs to be done first and left to heal for 4-9 months before implant placement is carried out.
