Can I ever have dental implants with gum disease?

I was diagnosed with gum disease at the end of last year and my dentist sent me to a gum specialist for some major gum treatment. He cleaned all my teeth several times and told me that I had to have three teeth removed due to the severity of the gum problems around them. My own dentist removed those teeth and left a gap there afterwards. I enquired if I could have dental implants but the gum specialist advised against it and said that I cant have any dental implants. I would like to know if I have to accept dentures due to my gum condition and is there any hope of being able to have dental implants?

If you can stabalise your gum disease and make it inactive, then its possible that your gum specialist will give you the go ahead for dental implant treatment. However, you must understand that your risk of dental implant loss through peri-implantitis is higher especially if your gum disease becomes active in future.
