Dental Phobia

Dental phobia (Dentophobia) is perhaps more common than people may think. One in four members of the UK population will suffer from some kind of dental related fear in their lifetime. With this in mind, dental professionals are often highly skilled in looking after patients with concerns or anxieties. There are even clinics, like ours, that offer procedures to calm and manage the stress and worry. Here at Pearl Dental Clinic, we understand that, for some, visiting the dentist can be an ordeal. Therefore, we take every care to ensure our patients are happy and looked after at all times. We will always discuss the treatment with patients first, so they know exactly what to expect. Patients can also take advantage of our sedation dentistry techniques if they need it for relaxation.

Common causes of dental phobia

There are many reasons why patients may be apprehensive or afraid to visit us. Some of these reasons include:

  • Fear of the dental drill.
  • Concerns about the diagnosis.
  • If the patient does not respond well to anaesthetic and is unable to be numbed.
  • Problems processing the sounds and smells of the clinic.
  • Phobia of needles.
  • Fear of pain.
  • If a patient experiences panic attacks due to the environment.
  • Fear of choking or a sensitive gap reflex.
  • Having had a bad dental experience either as an adult or as a child.

How can we help?

Highly Trained Specialist Staff: All of our staff are highly trained and friendly, to help and support nervous patients to access the treatment they need.

Intra-Venous Sedation: We have IV Sedation available during all of our appointments (this includes late night, weekend, and emergency appointments). IV sedation is one of the most effective ways of relaxing an anxious patient and is delivered safely by our medical doctor or qualified sedation dentists.

Inhalation Sedation: Some patients may know this method as Nitrous Oxide or laughing gas. This technique is especially good for needle phobic patients as it is administered through a face mask rather than intravenously.

Dental Hypnotherapy: We offer a course of hypnosis delivered by a trained hypnotherapist.

Painless Injections (The Wand): For patients who are needle phobic we offer painless injections. This procedure is FREE and takes away the stinging, burning sensation that patients experience from a traditional needle and syringe.
