Jaw Reconstruction Using 3D Printing

Fri

Latest News

An Australian woman has undergone a full jaw reconstruction using 3D printing technology. Back in 1989, Susie Robinson was twenty years old. One night while she was driving with friends her car left the road in a horrific accident.Jaw Reconstruction Using 3D Printing  When police arrived on the scene they were shocked to find that everyone in the car had survived. However, they were all left with life-changing scars and injuries. Ms. Robinson suffered from a shattered jaw. Surgeons had to use thirty pins and many meters of wire to hold her jaw together. She also lost her four front teeth.

For years after the accident, Ms. Robinson underwent numerous surgeries to try and fix the problem. Despite this, her jaw was never completely repaired. Therefore, she decided to opt for a new technology. The 3D printer is used to print a perfectly fitting titanium jawbone implant. This is then held in place by micro screws. Once the implant is in place, over time, the natural bone grows around the implant. Dental teeth implants can also be fixed to the structure. With the success of this pioneering jaw reconstruction using 3D printing, dental reconstruction surgery could potentially develop in unimaginable ways. For Ms. Robinson, it was the answer to a nearly three-decade problem.

New nano technology for dental implants

Mon

Latest News

A group of UK researchers and scientists have developed a new nano technology for dental implants. The new nano coating is said to reduce the risk of peri-implantitis developing. Peri-implantitis is inflammation around the implant and is the main cause of their failure.

The nano-coating is made up of titanium oxide, silver, and hydroxyapatite. In the trials these helped to stop the growth of bacteria and also bacteria biofilm by nearly ninety-eight percent. Therefore, a significant breakthrough in fighting implant failure. As well as fighting bacteria the nano coating helped the implants successfully attach to the bone.

Professor Chris Tredwin is part of the scientific research team. He is also Head of Plymouth University’s Dentistry School. Professor Tredwin had this to say about their findings. “We have identified the means to protect dental implants against the most common cause of their failure. The potential of our work for increased patient comfort and satisfaction, and reduced costs is great and we look forward to translating our findings into clinical practice.” Therefore, the new discovery could mean that dental implant failure could soon be a thing of the past.

Dr. Sands, Kim Kardashian’s dentist reveals all….

Dr. Sands has said that the secret to Kim’s beautiful smile is simply undergoing teeth whitening and Invisalign braces. The results from Invisalign, coupled with regular whitening, has given her one on the most well-known smiles in Hollywood.

Dr. Sands’ expert advice was featured on Hollywoodlife.com. “For optimal results, you should get a cleaning before you get a whitening — any plaque on your teeth will not bleach. You need to avoid coloured foods for the first 48 hours after your teeth whitening. Your pores are more exposed and susceptible to stain.” Therefore, if you would like a smile like Kim’s then Invisalign treatment and teeth whitening are the way forward.

Dentaid pilot project extends to Bradford

Dentaid pilot project extends to Bradford to target vulnerable patients. The charity is well known for its work at home and abroad and offers dental care to refugees and third world countries. However, Dentaid’s newest project focuses closer to home. They have rolled out a new project in Yorkshire and the Humber to focus on providing dental care to patients most in need.

The new scheme involves newly qualified dentists providing dental care and treatment to Bradford’s most vulnerable. This includes refugees, the homeless and people suffering from addiction. The new dentists offer their time free of charge which, therefore, helps them to develop and gain valuable experience. Since December, Dentaid has hosted five clinics. The clinics have been a huge success.

Dentaid has contributed equipment and portable dental chairs to the initiative. As a result, this donation ensures that treatment can be carried out more effectively. They are hoping to roll out similar services to other parts of the country in the near future. Colgate are also supporting the pilot scheme. Due to this, it means that free toothbrushes and toothpaste are readily available to those who desperately need them.

The breakdown of her relationship with Kris Smith, the father of her child, and thyroid issues have taken their toll on the Aussie celebrity. In a recent interview with The Sun newspaper, Dannii opened up about how Botox helped her through a tough time.

Dannii was quoted on NEWS.com.au, “I don’t think I’m the only woman to use Botox that way, except a lot of times I think it might be a subconscious thing — that you don’t want people to see how you really feel.” However, the star did go on to say that she is ‘genuinely happy’ now, and is looking forward to her role in Gary Barlow’s new show, Let It Shine.

There has always been debate over cosmetic treatments such as Botox and dermal fillers, however, it is clear that they can have a positive effect. Looking good on the outside helped Dannii work on feeling good on the inside.
