Emergency dentistry news: Gum disease ‘can lead to cancer’

Emergency dentistry news: Gum disease 'can lead to cancer'People who are interested in getting London cosmetic dentistry may be interested to hear about the importance of maintaining healthy gums.

Researchers have claimed that gum disease can lead to a number of illnesses including cancer if left untreated.

Dr Steven Weiner, a dentist based in Ontario, has urged people to act if their gums show any sign of weakness, the Toronto Sun reports.

Health conditions such as diabetes, premature birth, stroke and certain cancers – including pancreatic – have all been linked to poor oral hygiene.

Unhealthy gums can also lead to rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis and heart disease.

Dr Weiner said: "Normally, healthy gums protect us from the bad effects of that bacteria. In poor oral health, the bacteria go ahead and multiply, causing an inflammation of the gums."

Meanwhile, health website eHow suggests visiting the dentist regularly as well as brushing teeth for two minutes twice daily to keep gums healthy. ADNFCR-2621-ID-800501570-ADNFCR

News provider Orom Index has revealed the range of options available to those looking to sharpen up their smile and the list includes contouring or reshaping of misshapen teeth, teeth whitening treatments, bonding, dental veneers, bridges and gum lifts.

Each procedure is designed to address specific problems. For example, whitening could people whose teeth have been discoloured through years of smoking, while reshaping or the use of dental veneers can help those whose teeth are crooked or buck-toothed.

Meanwhile, Pickering dentist Dr Steven Weiner recently told the Montreal Gazette that many older people are no longer suffering from bad teeth, but instead are feeling the pain caused from poor gum health.

He noted that advances in cosmetic and emergency dentistry have helped people keep their teeth for longer, but in old age, the gums still can become an issue.
