Tyneside youngsters ‘have waiting times cut for treatment’

clear bracesYoung people in Tyneside could soon have a smile on their face following the appointment of a new orthodontist in the region.

Local paper the Shields Gazette reported waiting times to see a dentist in the region had previously been up at 146 weeks for orthodontic treatment such as clear braces.

However, the appointment of this new orthodontist will help to cut these times to just over 100 weeks.

Select committee for children and young people chairman Ernest Gibson told the paper: "Orthodontics can help to prevent problems in teeth. But just as important as that, is the boost to self-esteem a better smile can provide."

He added that the committee has witnessed a reduction in the amount of time young people are now waiting for treatment. However, despite these improvements, he still feels the length of time is unacceptable.

Meanwhile, the MyDentalOffice blog recently noted that children should be taught good oral hygiene from a young age in order to avoid the need for emergency dentist trips.

Early treatment ‘can help improve results for those with dental problems’

emergency dentist LondonPeople can avoid visiting an emergency dentist by facing up to orthodontic problems and visiting their dentists for regular check ups and early treatment of any issues, it has been argued.

Professor TP Chaturvedi, senior doctor of the Faculty Of Dental Sciences at Banaras Hindu University, noted almost 30 per cent of all dental problems are preventable and with regular visits to the dentist and daily cleaning, treatments like teeth whitening and clear braces should not be required.

"I have come across families of a number of girls of marriageable age, who have urged for orthodontic treatment as it proved to be a stumbling block in their marriage," he commented.

Prof Chaturvedi added that in cases like this, if early treatment is delayed, the issue becomes a social problem, not simply an orthodontic one.

Elsewhere, the Canadian Dental Association recently launched a new campaign to help protect children’s teeth and to educate about the need for dental hygiene.

What is a cosmetic dentist?

What is a cosmetic dentist?Oral health experts that specialise in cosmetic dentistry – perhaps teeth whitening or veneers – will ensure the state of a patient’s mouth is fit and strong, explained Best Syndication.

It is not until they are confident the teeth and gums are healthy they can begin aesthetic treatments, it added.

Professionals who are able to offer procedures such as lumineers or clear braces have to undergo more training than other types of dentists because of the amount of extra technology and devices they have to use.

The online resource pointed out practitioners must be comfortable with restorative techniques and different materials.

"Cosmetic dentistry goes a step beyond general dentistry," it stated.

"Dentists who practice cosmetic dentistry have the knowledge of general dentistry and a passion for the appearance of a durable, functional and beautiful smile."

Meanwhile, someone who is familiar with cosmetic dentistry treatments is 22-year-old Adam.

He appeared on GMTV to discus the procedures he had undergone – including teeth whitening – so he could try and be the male equivalent of glamour model Jordan, aka Katie Price.ADNFCR-2621-ID-19368902-ADNFCR

Clear braces ‘can give people the smile they want’

Clear braces 'can give people the smile they want'Having cosmetic dentistry by getting a clear brace fitted can allow people to get the smile they always wanted.

This is the view of Dr Tony Coughlan, an orthodontist working in Dublin who was responding to a 45-year-old’s letter into the Irish Times about fixing their crooked teeth.

According to the oral health professional, orthodontic treatments can be carried out at any age and are not just for children and adolescents.

Not only can this sort of procedure improve the health of teeth and gums, it can also help self-esteem and appearance, he added.

Clear braces can be an attractive option as they are less visible and Dr Coughlan pointed out the brackets used are much smaller than they were ten or 20 years ago.

"The majority of people who are conscious about their crooked teeth and have them realigned are very happy with the cosmetic outcome," he said.

Lineker’s bride ‘delighted with cosmetic dentistry’

Danielle Bux reportedly had Invisalign braces before wedding dayGary Lineker’s new bride is delighted with the results of cosmetic dentistry, it has been reported.

Lingerie model Danielle Bux spent some £2,000 on teeth whitening and Invisalign braces so she would have a perfect smile when tying the knot, explained the News of the World.

A source told the newspaper the 30-year-old went for the clear braces so she could get her gnashers straightened, without any wires being visible.

“She [also] got her teeth whitened like many brides do – to make them sparkle for her big day,” the insider added.

Lineker’s better half is not the only famous face to have worn Invisalign clear braces.

Actress Katherine Heigl – who starred in films 27 Dresses and Knocked Up – has also used the treatment to correct a crooked tooth before her wedding day.

In an interview with InStyle, she commented: “Pretty much the perfect way to describe Invisalign is Netflix for your teeth.”ADNFCR-2621-ID-19348743-ADNFCR

Clear braces ‘will catch on’

Clear braces are a growing trendAlthough clear braces are not yet as popular as metal ones, they will soon catch on, a dentist has asserted.

In an interview with Jakarta Globe, Linus Boekitwetan explained how a representative from the Invasilgn brand came to train local doctors how to carry out the procedure.

He noted the growing trend was currently popular with people in their 20s, adding around 90 per cent of those who undergo the procedure are women.

Dr Boekitwetan explained to the website how clear braces are made and work.

Firstly, an impression of the teeth is sent to a lab and comes back as a three-dimensional image, showing what the outcome of the procedure will be like.

"It’s pretty amazing. After the 3-D imaging is approved from our end, the lab starts the fabrication of the invisible aligners and sends them back to us," stated the oral health expert.

"No one will ever be able to tell you have them on. No metal, no wiring, no bending."
