Julia Roberts talks Botox ahead of new film release

02-04-2012
Mon

With the new Snow White adaptation ‘Mirror Mirror’ hitting cinemas this week, Julia Roberts must be getting used to questions about her appearance, and she’s opened up to Access Hollywood about her feelings on Botox and cosmetic surgery. The 44-year-old plays the evil queen in the latest reworking of the classic fairy-tale, a character who is obsessed with staying young and looking beautiful.

Although Julia has admitted to using Botox in the past, she revealed on the US TV show that she didn’t want to jeopardise her relationship with her children by overindulging; ‘ My feeling is I have three children who should know what emotion I’m feeling at the exact moment I’m feeling it… that is critical.’ The actress has Henry, 4, and twins Hazel and Phinneaus, 7, with husband Danny Moder.

Oscar-winner Roberts also commented that she wasn’t against people having cosmetic surgery to try and boost their self-esteem, joking that it wasn’t up to her to judge anyone who ‘can’t turn their head or move their lips.’ Having had facial injections earlier in her career, it now seems that motherhood has altered Julia’s priorities; she commented that, ‘As a mother, it’s whatever works for the person. I don’t know – if you want your chin on your forehead I’m not one to [judge]. If that’s going to bring you joy, I’m all for it.’

Apprentice star considers Botox

Lord Sugar’s right-hand man Nick Hewer is famous for raising an eyebrow or two at the antics of some of The Apprentice contestants, but the sixty-eight year old has revealed that he is thinking of getting Botox injections to keep his energetic brows in check. Nick, who is also the new host of Countdown, has said that his animated expressions could be a thing of the past if he follows in Lord Sugar’s footsteps and undergoes cosmetic treatment.

Two episodes into the eighth series of the BBC show, Nick’s famous frown has already made more than one appearance, and he has joked that the only way to stop it is to freeze the muscles using facial injections. ‘I don’t realise when I’m doing the frown.’ He admitted, ‘I’ve got a very mobile face and I think the cameramen pick up on it. I’m thinking I might have Botox to make it impossible to raise my eyebrows.’

The business tycoon was also at pains to point out that there were no rehearsals on The Apprentice, and his expressions were not deliberate; ‘It’s not like I practice it in the mirror. No one makes me raise my eyebrows on cue,’ He said, adding, ‘I am what I am. Nobody would have the nerve to ask me to do something to suit the cameras and there are no retakes.’

So far in The Apprentice, two of team Sterling have been given the chop after failing to meet Lord Sugar’s expectations in the field of business.

Kim Kardashian spotted at Botox salon in LA

Reality star Kim Kardashian is no stranger to controversy, and the 31-year-old always makes sure she looks good when she’s caught in the spotlight; however, she was recently spotted leaving an LA Botox salon looking less than her best. The second-eldest daughter of clan Kardashian was photographed leaving the clinic with red blotchy skin, shortly before an appearance at the Valentino party, where she wowed crowds in a black and white ensemble.

It’s still unclear whether Kim underwent Botox treatment, but it has been suggested that it was merely a flare-up of her on-going skin condition, psoriasis; however, the salon she was seen leaving does specialise in Botox therapy. The TV celebrity is very image conscious, spending a lot of time in the public eye at fashion events and Hollywood premieres, and she has admitted to dabbling in cosmetic enhancements in the past. The treatment ended badly for poor Kim, as she suffered a rare allergic reaction to the toxin, which left her skin swollen and bruised. ‘I’m never doing this again…’ Kim told her family, adding ‘at least not until I’m forty.’

Although she’s not shy about her use of Botox, Kim is adamant that she has not gone under the knife to keep her good looks intact, telling nightline last year that she was ‘totally not against plastic surgery… [Botox] is the only thing that I’ve done.’

David Cameron praises single mother’s teeth whitening enterprise

28-03-2012

Prime Minister David Cameron has praised one single mother’s will to succeed, after she was on the brink of bankruptcy, describing her achievements as crucial to economic recovery. Just a few short years ago, Liz Ridley was struggling to cope with the stress of childcare and work commitments after going through a divorce, and like most parents – single or not – money worries were at the top of her list. However, today she cuts a very different figure as the head of a thriving teeth-whitening company that caters to everyday working people and a string of celebrities.

Ms Ridley’s company, Pearlys, has almost fifty clinics across the country, and has treated X-Factor stars Alexandra Burke and JLS, among others. ‘It is going brilliantly and the company has grown beyond my dreams,’ the mother-of-one told the Evening Standard, ‘It’s been a long road and there were many moments when I thought ‘what am I doing?’ as the early days were full of mistakes.’

Mr Cameron singled out Ms Ridley’s achievement during a recent keynote speech he gave about economic growth, praising her entrepreneurial spirit and support for national recovery. Ms Ridley had previous experience with cosmetic treatments as she ran a Botox clinic and worked as a medical sales rep, but she was forced to change her career when she and her husband filed for divorce, ‘nothing prepared me for running a business on my own,’ she admitted, ‘But I had no choice. The job did not give me enough flexibility to care for my son, so I had to go it alone.’

British dentist goes for gold at London 2012

Tue

Northern Ireland’s Wendy Houvenaghel has laid down her dentist’s tools for the time being and has her sights firmly set on gold at the London 2012 Olympics. The thirty-seven-year-old has said she will return to her career after the games, but Houvenaghel won’t settle for anything less than victory in the 3km individual pursuit cycling event, after taking the silver in Beijing behind GB’s Rebecca Romero. ‘I’m totally committed to attempt to win the gold medal with my team-mates in August,’ the professional cyclist said, adding that there were ‘many sacrifices’ that she has made in in pursuit of her dream.

Wendy, who is a former Royal Air Force Flight Lieutenant, is focusing on the summer games for now, and plans to return to dental work afterwards, saying ‘ There’s a lot I need to think about in the future, but at the moment I can only think about the next few weeks and months and the Olympic Games. I’d imagine at some point in time I’ll pick up my dentist drill again and resume that career.’

While she’s been a full-time athlete for the last six years, the dental industry has moved forward in leaps and bounds, but Wendy is confident that she can easily get back into the swing of things, when the time comes for her to pack up her bicycle for good, whenever that may be; ‘I have been keeping up to date,’ she said, ‘and I will look forward to getting back to that again, just when remains to be seen.

Redheads dread going to the dentist

26-03-2012
Mon

Unfortunately for three per cent of England’s population and thirteen per cent of Scotland’s, it’s not just the sun that can prove troublesome, a new study by Southampton University Hospital has initially shown that pale-skinned redheads in both countries are likely to feel more pain when visiting the dentist, and will require more anaesthetic. Researchers have discovered that the genes that affect the colour of hair and skin are the same as the ones that help produce endorphins – the body’s natural painkillers.

The study of volunteers over the age of thirty involves anaesthetising the subject and then administering a small electrical charge to their thigh, then comparing the reaction with another group of people with brown or black hair. Although the research won’t be complete until September, early evidence suggests that the red-haired volunteers do feel more pain, which concurs with a similar study carried out in the US that revealed that redheads were generally more nervous about receiving dental treatment, and more than twice as likely to avoid it.

Dr Edwin Liem, who led the first study at Louisville University, commented that ‘Redheads experience more pain from a given stimulus and therefore require more anaesthesia to alleviate that pain.’ A second experiment in the same field showed that women with red hair needed nineteen per cent more pain relief to stop them from reacting to negative stimulation, than those with dark hair that were tested in the same way.

Katy Perry OCD over oral hygiene

23-03-2012
Fri

Everyone knows that brushing your teeth regularly is a must if you want to keep them in good condition and prevent dental problems, but it appears that American singer Katy Perry has taken the advice a step too far, as she admits to taking a supply of new toothbrushes everywhere she goes, to stop her teeth from getting cavities.

A source told the Daily Star that Katy had experienced tooth decay when she was younger and is so determined to avoid the problem that she brushes her teeth up to six times a day. The singer spoke to YouTube this week and revealed that a childhood fascination with the teeth of pop star Britney Spears started her obsession with oral hygiene, saying ‘I wanted them to be like Britney Spears white. I used to grow up seeing her music videos and be like ‘what does she do? Does she get a new set of teeth all the time? They’re so white.’

The 27-year-old divorcee also admitted that suffering with dental caries as a child contributed to the habit, ‘I’ll brush my teeth [after] breakfast, lunch and dinner,’ she says, ‘I did have thirteen cavities at one time, so you can imagine why I’m so freaked out. When I was a kid I didn’t really go to the dentist a lot and when I finally went, they were like, ‘you might as well get a new set of teeth.’

Watchdog bans Groupon ad featuring Botox

22-03-2012
Thu

Promotional voucher company Groupon have run into trouble with industry watchdogs this week, after launching an ad campaign that offered dermal fillers at a reduced price, whilst mentioning that the voucher could be used for Botox as well – which is not allowed, as the treatment must be purchased with a prescription. Although Groupon were adamant that the deal was for dermal fillers only, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) found that the promotion did mention Botox and told them to pull it from the public domain in its current form.

A spokesperson for the ASA said; ‘We considered that because the savings figures appear to have been calculated on the basis of Botox treatments, rather than dermal fillers, and in the absence of evidence to that the promotion was for dermal fillers, we concluded that the promotion was for Botox, a prescription-only medication.’

This is not the first time Groupon has come under fire from the ASA, in December last year they contacted the Office of Fair Trading with regards to the company’s attitude towards the Advertising Code, which they had ‘serious concerns’ about. A Groupon representative released a statement saying ‘Groupon takes any claims by the ASA very seriously. We have further improved our checks and processes around claims for health and beauty products, to make sure our customers have the information they need to make informed buying decisions.’

True Blood actress undergoes dental surgery

21-03-2012

Evan Rachel Wood is probably better known for her turbulent three year relationship with shock rocker Marilyn Manson than her acting, but being in the public eye for whatever reason means the 24-year-old still has to keep her smile in tip-top condition. Six months on from losing her tooth after taking an elbow to the face in a Paris nightclub, Evan has been back to the dentist to get the damage fixed.

‘It was just past midnight and I was dancing with my friends in Paris,’ The actress told People magazine shortly after the incident, ‘and just boom, I caught an elbow right in the left side of my face. I knew right away when I closed my mouth that something was really wrong.’ She joked that she looked like a character from The Hangover, and tried to laugh it off ‘but the person that did it was crying because they felt so bad.’ She later added that the night was a memorable one, saying ‘I’ll never forget my 24th birthday when my tooth got punched out.’

After having the tooth replaced temporarily, Evan has undergone more invasive treatment to deal with the problem long-term. The True Blood star tweeted her followers online to let them know about the upcoming surgery and to ask for their support; ‘Getting ready for some serious dental surgery.’ she posted, ‘Finishing the work on my teeth once and for all. Send good vibes everyone!’

Courteney Cox talks Botox

20-03-2012
Tue

It seems like only yesterday that fresh-faced Courteney Cox shot to worldwide fame as Friends character Monica Geller, and the 47-year-old is still trying to hold onto her glory days, by indulging in various anti-aging treatments. The divorced mother-of-one is looking as youthful as ever, despite a punishing schedule of acting, producing and caring for daughter Coco, and she credits her beauty regime with keeping her complexion flawless.

‘I am an absolute guinea pig for anything what will keep me feeling good’, Courteney told The Telegraph in an interview, ‘If someone says, ‘you should try apple stem cells’, guess who’ll be putting them on her face the next day.’ She also admits that aging is difficult, especially in LA, and says that as she’s nearing fifty, she is willing to try just about anything to keep herself looking young, ‘Let’s be clear; looking youthful is something I do a lot of research on. Man, I could use some Botox right now.’ she jokes.

The actress also talks about using Botox to prepare for acting roles, but says that she doesn’t feel the need for it when she is working behind the camera, and goes on to talk about her battle against the notoriously ageist Hollywood scene, adding ‘I’m just hoping [current TV show] Cougar Town will be around for a while, otherwise, oh my God, I’ll have to start all over.’
