Hormone replacement therapy could reduce the risk of gum disease

Thu

Latest News

A new study has shown that hormone replacement therapy could reduce the risk of gum disease. Also known as HRT, hormone replacement therapy is usually prescribed to combat common symptoms of the menopause. However, now scientists are suggesting that there could be oral health benefits to the medication too. During the menopause, women can become more susceptible to oral health problems. This is due to a decrease in oestrogen levels. The new research has shown that HRT can help to protect women from these issues developing.

Researchers on the project studied four hundred and ninety-two women. The age range spanned from fifty to eighty-seven. The scientists discovered that gum disease was less prevalent in the one hundred and thirteen women who were undergoing HRT. There was a forty-four percent decrease in the disease in this group. These women were receiving HRT for osteoporosis.

Dr JoAnn Pinkerton, executive of the American Moenopause Society, released a statement. This explained how osteoporosis can have a knock-on effect on the whole body. One of these issues is a weakening of the jaw bone. As a result of this, women can suffer from increased risk of gum disease. However, going forward, hormone replacement therapy could reduce the risk of gum disease in this age range. This could be a valuable discovery for women’s oral health.

Dentist volunteered in Nepal

Thu

Latest News

A Milton Keynes dentist volunteered in Nepal recently, through the Dentaid charity. Anne Martin Powders wanted to give something back to people less fortunate. Following the earthquake that hit Nepal in 2015, the country has struggled to rebuild itself. Therefore, vital dental supplies have been in short supply. The Dentaid project has been supporting schools, orphanages, and street children in the affected areas. They have been providing dental care and education to some of the poorest children in the country.

Anne was part of a team of volunteers that visited the country for two weeks. She reported that it was ‘heartbreaking’ to see the street children in such a predicament. However, the presence of the volunteers helped to provide essential dental care. Anne also spoke of the excitement of the children at the orphanages when the team arrived. As well as dental care they handed out toys, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. They also provided demonstrations to the children on how to brush their teeth properly. Without volunteers like Anne, these children may not have received the vital care that they need.

Research suggests Botox can help alleviate depression

Wed

Latest News

New research suggests Botox can help alleviate depression. Botox has many more benefits than just reducing wrinkles. The cosmetic product is also used to help with tremors, migraines, and overactive sweating.

A recent study was published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, which explained the concept behind emotional proprioception. “When you inject the frown lines with Botox or another neuromodulator such as Xeomin or Dysport, it also blocks the brain’s trigeminal nerve, which is what gives us the ability to frown and also tells the brain that we are sad.” Therefore, blocking the brain’s ability to frown seems to be having a knock-on effect on feeling happier. This, coupled with looking good can have powerful effects.

Although the research is in the early stages, the results so far seem very encouraging. Studies are also suggesting that Botox may help to combat depression without the patient experiencing as many side effects as antidepressants. Researchers are calling the findings fascinating, and it is certainly a step in the right direction as far as treating depression is concerned.

How Botox is helping artist Peter Howson

Wed

Latest News

Recently the Daily Mail featured a story about how Botox is helping artist Peter Howson. People often think of Botox as just an anti-ageing treatment, however, it is much more than that. Peter is one of Scotland’s most well-known artists. He has been successful in this field for many years. Recently though he was diagnosed with Dystonic Tremors, which is quite rare. A symptom of this is tremors and shaking. Due to this Peter was finding it very difficult to paint.

There is actually no cure for the disease, however, there is a surprising treatment that suppresses the symptoms. The artist is now undergoing regular Botox injections in his wrist. The treatment is administered in very small amounts directly into the muscles that are causing the tremors.

Peter admits that he used to be suspicious of Botox and would never have considered having the treatment before this issue developed. He was quoted as saying, “Ironically, I have a complete aversion to all kinds of cosmetic treatments and surgery so it’s quite funny that I’ve had to turn to Botox injections in my wrist to allow me to continue my work.” The Glasgow-born artist is preparing for a big exhibition in New York. The exhibition is due to be unveiled in May of this year.  Luckily he can now paint unhindered due to the versatility of Botox injections.

Celebrities get ready for awards season

Mon

The way celebrities get ready for awards season varies, however, most will have cosmetic tweaks here and there to enhance their look. As well as amazing hair, makeup, and jaw-dropping dresses, the face and teeth are as important. Celebs may undergo cosmetic dentistry to look and feel great. Some of the more common procedures are teeth whitening, Botox, dermal fillers, veneers and invisible braces.

Dr Esho’s opinion:

Dr Esho has given his opinion to the Daily Mail on who he thinks has had extra help. The popular celebrity cosmetic doctor believes that he can identify the stars who have had treatments. For example, celebs such as Jennifer Lopez and Penelope Cruz are looking differently to previous years, however, both still looking fabulous. Although he has not treated any of these stars personally, he provides his professional opinion. “It does appear that her [J-Lo’s] lips have increased in size and shape over time, which suggests small amounts of lip filler over a sustained period of time – very subtle.” Dr. Esho also believes that Rita Ora’s beautiful face has recently undergone Botox injections. While the celebrities get ready for awards season, the public eagerly anticipates who will win these prestigious events. With a specific focus on who will look great doing so.

Dentaid pilot project extends to Bradford

Dentaid pilot project extends to Bradford to target vulnerable patients. The charity is well known for its work at home and abroad and offers dental care to refugees and third world countries. However, Dentaid’s newest project focuses closer to home. They have rolled out a new project in Yorkshire and the Humber to focus on providing dental care to patients most in need.

The new scheme involves newly qualified dentists providing dental care and treatment to Bradford’s most vulnerable. This includes refugees, the homeless and people suffering from addiction. The new dentists offer their time free of charge which, therefore, helps them to develop and gain valuable experience. Since December, Dentaid has hosted five clinics. The clinics have been a huge success.

Dentaid has contributed equipment and portable dental chairs to the initiative. As a result, this donation ensures that treatment can be carried out more effectively. They are hoping to roll out similar services to other parts of the country in the near future. Colgate are also supporting the pilot scheme. Due to this, it means that free toothbrushes and toothpaste are readily available to those who desperately need them.

3D printed teeth become a reality

3D printed teeth become a reality

Thanks to a collaboration between Dubai’s Middle East Dental Laboratory and Sinterex, 3D printed teeth become a reality. The process uses a 3D printer to achieve natural looking dental implant bridges. The printed teeth are stunningly realistic, making it near impossible to tell the difference. The new technology will also speed up the process of creating dental bridges.

The 3D printing process starts by distributing thin layers of metal powder across a platform. This is then selectively melted by a laser. The use of the laser gives the implants their shape and definition. The implants then have metal parts added to them. These are used to attach it to the patient’s bone. Finally, ceramic is applied. The ceramic gives the implants an even and natural finish which replicates the look of tooth enamel.

Managing Director of Sinterex, Julian Callanan, has been quoted in the media saying, “Using our state of the art 3D printing technology we have been able to produce a highly accurate metal framework in only 4 hours.” This breakthrough is huge in terms of production within the dental industry. 3D printing will increase the speed in which dentists can produce moulds, therefore keeping the patient happy and increasing profits at the same time.
