Diane Keaton’s eating disorder almost destroyed her smile

Hollywood actress Diane Keaton has opened up about her battle with bulimia that almost led to her losing her teeth permanently. The 65-year-old star was living on an astonishing 20,000 calories a day, but was severely underweight for five years.

In her new memoir Then Again, Diane admits she spent a lot of her time consuming large amounts of food, then purging her stomach to prevent weight gain. The acid she also brought up damaged her teeth so badly that the front ones had to be capped, to stop them falling out completely. Although she suffers other health effects, such as heartburn and sore throat, Diane is proud that she was able to beat the disorder, saying that even though she enjoyed squeezing into tiny sizes for the red carpet, it was really just a ‘big lie’, she happily told The Sunday Times Magazine ‘I never get the urge to do it now.’

The First Wives Club actress, compared the problem to alcoholics, who also didn’t feel the desire to drink after they managed to stay clean for a period of time. ‘I remember thinking it’s not possible. But it is possible. It really does alter your life, being an addict, this is how people get reduced and your life implodes in on you.’

Diane has had a tough time of it in the past few months, having been diagnosed with a form of skin cancer in her cheek. She had the cells removed and seems to be in good spirits as she promotes her book, which was released on November 14th, let’s hope her new teeth can keep her smiling through.

Jockey has cosmetic dentistry carried out.

Winner of the 2009 Grand National Liam Treadwell has had cosmetic dentistry treatments carried out to fix his bad teeth following a BBC interview which highlighted his bad teeth.

Treadwell rode the 100-1 outsider Mon Mome and during a TV interview after the race BBC reporter Clare Balding highlighted his bad dentistry.

“My new teeth are amazing,” he told The Express. “I’m absolutely delighted. It’s taken the best part of 11 months. It was heavy duty treatment but it was virtually painless. The transformation has been unbelievable.”

Elsewhere, Dr David Mady Jr recently told the Windsor Star that people who keep their teeth in good condition have faster check-ups with the dentist and suffer from less stress as a result.

He noted it is important to keep up a regular oral health routine and while this will ensure a person’s teeth are in the best condition, it will also enable them to spend less time in the dentist’s chair.

Reality stars ‘lacking smile confidence’

Many would-be celebrities lack the confidence to make it big.

There are a group of talented amateurs who have not fulfilled their potential due to a fear of the dentist, it has been claimed.

Gary Hall Jr, honorary celebrity chairman of the 2010 Sedation Dentistry Safety Week, said people should not let a fear of dentistry undermine their dreams and that many of the problems which stop people smiling – such as discoloured or wonky teeth – can be easily fixed in the dentist’s chair.

“Fear of the dentist is the number one reason why talented, charismatic amateurs live their lives with unseemly smiles,” he commented.

Elsewhere, Hollywood actress Jessica Simpson recently claimed she never brushes her teeth, but instead relies on mouthwash to keep her teeth clean.

However, this type of oral health regimen is not recommended and people are advised to brush their teeth twice daily and use mouthwash and dental floss to ensure they remove all the debris and plaque from between their teeth.
