Cosmetic dentistry news: Holly Willoughby 'has best celebrity smile'People contemplating getting London cosmetic dentistry could be interested to know TV presenter Holly Willoughby's smile has been named the best in show business.

The This Morning host received a quarter of the votes as part of the survey conducted by the British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF), Dentistry.co.uk reports.

Results also revealed that 18 per cent of people voted stunning model and TV personality Kelly Brook's smile the most attractive, awarding her second place.

Both Prince William and footballer David Beckham topped the poll for men, receiving 11 per cent of the vote each.

However, the Duke of Cambridgeshire's younger brother Harry came in last place with only three per cent of the vote.

Chief Executive of the BDHF Dr Nigel Carter said: "The growing trend towards cosmetic dentistry may be a result of the way celebrities present themselves, but we must not forget the basics of good oral hygiene."

Celebrities 'maintain Hollywood smiles with cosmetic dentistry'An increase in the popularity of cosmetic dentistry could be due to the high number of celebrities opting for the treatment.

Singers and actors with dazzling white teeth seem to be encouraging regular people to aspire for the same thing, Dental Health Magazine suggested.

While various celebrities will pay thousands of pounds to maintain their perfect smiles, experts have revealed there are cheaper options that could have the same effect.

Cheryl Cole, who has recently been announced as a judge on the American version of The X Factor, was transformed after receiving dental veneers and teeth whitening in the early stages of her career.

Other celebrities who have sought cosmetic dentistry include singer Hilary Duff and Cole's fellow X Factor judge Simon Cowell.

Meanwhile, the General Dental Council has urged the government to take action to create tougher controls for cosmetic dental procedures such as teeth whitening and ensure they can only be conducted in a safe and hygienic environment.ADNFCR-2621-ID-800527209-ADNFCR

Cosmetic dentistry ‘causing paradigm shift in treatment types’

Cosmetic dentistry 'causing paradigm shift in treatment types'An increase in the number of people getting cosmetic dentistry has caused a shift in how procedures are carried out.

High volumes of people now attend dental appointments to receive cosmetic treatment such as teeth whitening rather than just dental check-ups, Dentistry.co.uk reports.

In an article for the website, Dr Andrew Chandrapal acknowledged an increase in people wanting to go to the dentist rather than because they need to.

Modern non-invasive cosmetic dental procedures could be one reason for this, with people more likely to opt for a treatment that is less painful.

Patients can also seek useful advice from medical professionals about which methods of cosmetic dentistry will be most suited to them.

A significant increase in the number of celebrities choosing to undergo procedures such as teeth whitening and dental veneers could also have affected the number of normal people opting for the procedure.

Stars such as Cheryl Cole, Simon Cowell and Tom Cruise have all received treatment to improve their Hollywood smiles.ADNFCR-2621-ID-800526883-ADNFCR

General Dental Council calls for tougher controls on teeth whiteningStrict regulations should be placed upon teeth whitening practitioners to ensure patient safety, the General Dental Council (GDC) has claimed.

Calling for tougher controls, the organisation has put forward proposals to ensure those performing the procedure are appropriately trained, BBC News reports.

This comes after an increase in the number of people choosing to undergo the treatment in high streets and shopping centres in a bid to save money.

Chief executive of the GDC Evlynne Gilvarry warned people contemplating having their teeth whitened that the procedure should be carried out in a clean and hygienic environment by a professional.

She said: "Over the last few years we have received hundreds of complaints from the public and dental professionals about poor tooth whitening."

Meanwhile, the popularity of teeth whitening procedures in America has been highlighted after figures from the American Institute of Cosmetic Dentistry revealed £1.4 billion (£846 million) is spent on the procedure annually, Stylecaster reports.ADNFCR-2621-ID-800519902-ADNFCR

Consuming large amounts of coffee and red wine could lead to badly stained teeth which need cosmetic dentistry work. Those who drink red wine and coffee regularly have been warned that consuming large amounts of the drinks could lead to badly stained teeth which need cosmetic dentistry work.

Writing on the Bella Sugar page, one blogger said that as well as dark-coloured wine and strong coffee, some types of tea and fizzy drinks can also lead to stained and unsightly teeth.

However, the source noted that people may not want to go without their morning coffee pick-me-up or can of fizzy drink at lunchtime – so what are the options?

As well as undergoing cosmetic dentistry treatment such as teeth whitening or dental veneers, red wine and coffee drinkers should make sure they brush teeth well and use a whitening toothpaste. One designed to remove yellow stains from the teeth of heavy smokers could be ideal.

Also, occasionally swapping red wine for white could be worthwhile, and making sure dark-coloured fizzy drinks are consumed with a straw can help make sure the liquid does not come into contact with pearly whites.

In older people, tooth and gum disease is one of the most common dental problems, it noted. The warning signs of this condition can be flagged up by regular visits to a cosmetic dentistry practitioner and as such, people should take a trip to their London dentist every six months or so.

Those who enjoy a diet rich in omega-3 can benefit from a lower risk of developing gum disease, Dr Kenneth Mukamal from the Harvard Medical School told Reuters last year.

The doctor and his team looked into the dental health of more than 9,000 people as part of a study and found that those who had eaten "intermediate or high amounts" of omega-3 fatty acids – which are found in fish – were less likely to have the condition.
