Dentist adds the King’s crown to his collection

28-02-2012
Tue

The Canadian dentist who bought John Lennon’s rotten molar for $30,000 has added another famous dental item to his collection – the spare crown that Elvis took on tour in case he damaged his front teeth, complete with plaster mould of the King’s jaws. It has not yet been revealed how much Dr Michael Zuk paid for the item, but he admitted that his wife was not too happy with his decision to bid on the crown, urging him not to waste his money on ‘another stupid tooth’.

Despite his wife’s misgivings, Dr Zuk couldn’t help himself when the Elvis memorabilia came up for auction yesterday in Stockport, he collected this piece and the extracted tooth of Beatles legend John Lennon because he feels that the two men where important icons that should be remembered. Since purchasing the crown, Dr Zuk has been asked to take part in a documentary about celebrity DNA, to discuss the significance of the dental artefact in relation to popular culture.

Dr Zuk is also thought to be selling limited edition commemorative prints of the Lennon molar under the banner of ‘Rot Star Art’, which will go on sale as a celebration of the Beatles arriving in the US in February 1964. The molar – which also has its own Twitter following – is currently being considered for the Guinness book of records, as long as it can be cross-referenced with the DNA of a living relative, to ensure its origins.

The King’s dental mould up for auction

A dental impression of Elvis Presley’s teeth is going up for auction later this month, and is expected to reach at least £10,000, as fans of the legendary singer raid their bank accounts to own what has been dubbed ‘the King’s Crown.’ The mould clearly shows both upper and lower jaws, and also has a spare crown over one of the front teeth, which Elvis kept handy in case he damaged one of his teeth while on tour.

Memphis dentist Henry J Weiss provided dental care for ‘The King’ until 1971 and he prepared the porcelain cap himself, after Elvis cracked his front tooth on a microphone while performing in Las Vegas. The mould comes complete with letters of authenticity from the family of Dr Weiss (his wife and sons) and Joe Esposito, who worked as Presley’s road manager. It is being kept in a glass display case until the auction on the 25th of February.

The auctioneers, Omega Auctions, are becoming regulars with celebrity dental items, after they sold John Lennon’s extracted molar at the end of last year, Paul Fairweather, of the Stockport firm, said that they were ‘extremely excited on the consignment of this truly unique item from the King of Rock and Roll. Whilst it is not a real tooth, as was the case with the Lennon tooth, it is the only one in existence and we expect there to be considerable interest in this.’

Reality TV mum heads back to the dentist

It was barely four months ago when reality star Kate Gosselin tweeted to her fans that she was heading to the dentist for a root canal filling, and now it seems her dental problems have returned; she posted recently that she was going back into surgery, after damaging her crown.

Back in September, the mum of eight kept her followers updated on her treatment, and promised to redouble her efforts on the oral hygiene front, saying ‘Just had the privilege of experiencing my very first root canal… from today forward, I vow to brush and floss every hour on the hour to avoid that again!’ However, no amount of brushing can prepare for accidents and injuries, and she tweeted yesterday that she had to be ‘rushed to the dentist’ after her temporary crown broke while she was eating a snack. Kate asked her fans for support, admitting ‘I am SO scared of [the] dentist… wish me luck!’

Fortunately, the procedure didn’t go too badly, and the 35-year-old was pleasantly surprised with the speedy repair job, saying ‘Survived [the] dentist – was in&out in 40 min! Heard of ‘fast food’? this was ‘fast dentist!’ All better!’ She also added that it was time for ‘dinner cleanup, homework, showers&bed!’ for her sizeable brood, which made her famous when they all took part in reality show Jon & Kate Plus Eight.

Stephen Fry has dental surgery

Comedian Stephen Fry is well-known for his constant Tweeting, and just like the rest of the Twitter nation, he takes to the social-networking site to post his views about everything from politics to his dental treatment. Never shy about speaking his mind, the 54-year-old is one of the most popular users on Twitter, with over 100,000 followers reading his every Tweet.
After an initial consultation, the British actor was told he would need a triple crown fitting, as a temporary restoration, and then he was booked in for another appointment some time next week, to have the permanent replacement fitted. Stephen was not looking forward to his surgery, telling his Twitter followers on Friday morning; ‘Hell’s teeth & a bucket of blood. 3 hour session at the dentist coming up. There isn’t enough Xanax (anti-anxiety drug) in the world to prepare for this.’
After his nervous tweets, it appeared that the Blackadder Goes Forth star was pleasantly surprised by the outcome, as he updated fans on his progress; ‘Well that went better than expected.’ He posted, adding; ‘Temporary triple crown fitted on bottom row. Real ones installed next week.’ Stephen also joked that he was so comfortable during the operation, that he ‘Actually fell asleep’ in the dentist’s chair. Let’s hope his follow-up appointment runs just as smoothly, it’s obvious that the Twitter addict will let us know, either way.

Charlie Sheen’s ‘new grill’ still needs some work

Wed

TV actor Charlie Sheen was back in the news this week as he unveiled a brand new set of teeth, but his recent appearance at the Fox’s All-Star Party in Pasadena, California, left some of his fans wondering whether his dental work was just beginning.

Dressed casually in jeans and a blazer, the 46-year-old was grinning from ear to ear as he chatted with Anger Management’s executive producer, Bruce Helford, revealing at least one tooth that seemed to be a much whiter shade than the rest of them. Although Sheen’s smile is much improved, the ivory crown, that has replaced his infamous gold incisor, stood out starkly against his tanned face and newly dyed hair. It’s possible that the tooth is simply a temporary crown, put in place while a permanent one is prepared, or perhaps the TV star is planning to have the rest of his teeth whitened to match it.

Most of Charlie Sheen’s dental problems have been blamed on his abuse of substances during a very public firing and breakdown last year, but the father-of-five now insists he is ‘not crazy anymore’ and considers himself ‘mellower’. His cleaned up image could go some way to proving that, as he begins work on several TV and advertising projects. The actor claims he has turned over a new leaf, saying ‘That was an episode. I’m a different person than I was yesterday.’

Cheryl Cole has the perfect smile

She hasn’t had a lot to smile about in the past few months, but Cheryl Cole can feel better knowing that when she does flash those pearly whites, she’ll be the envy of the show-biz world. According to a study carried out by Manchester Metropolitan University, the former X-Factor judge has all the ingredients needed for a perfect smile.

Dr David Holmes revealed that it wasn’t just to do with the colour and shape of the teeth, the shape of the face and smile ‘technique’ were also contributing factors. ‘Cheryl Cole is a great example of the perfect smile.’ He said ‘It’s no coincidence that she has been such a success and become the nation’s sweetheart, her smile helps her come over as genuine, attractive, and engaging.’

The perfect smile is thought to be a combination of face shape, lip and tooth health, and confidence. Dr Holmes added ‘A major factor is how well you can produce a full ‘arch-bow’ smile; a wide, deep crescent revealing teeth but not gums, and reaching up to the eyes.’

The research also revealed that smiling with confidence could have considerable effect on our social standing, even help with our love lives. Dr Holmes noted ‘Smiling not only makes us feel good, it is also fundamental to human attachment, helps strengthen relationships and bonds people together.’
