Dentist adds the King’s crown to his collection

28-02-2012
Tue

The Canadian dentist who bought John Lennon’s rotten molar for $30,000 has added another famous dental item to his collection – the spare crown that Elvis took on tour in case he damaged his front teeth, complete with plaster mould of the King’s jaws. It has not yet been revealed how much Dr Michael Zuk paid for the item, but he admitted that his wife was not too happy with his decision to bid on the crown, urging him not to waste his money on ‘another stupid tooth’.

Despite his wife’s misgivings, Dr Zuk couldn’t help himself when the Elvis memorabilia came up for auction yesterday in Stockport, he collected this piece and the extracted tooth of Beatles legend John Lennon because he feels that the two men where important icons that should be remembered. Since purchasing the crown, Dr Zuk has been asked to take part in a documentary about celebrity DNA, to discuss the significance of the dental artefact in relation to popular culture.

Dr Zuk is also thought to be selling limited edition commemorative prints of the Lennon molar under the banner of ‘Rot Star Art’, which will go on sale as a celebration of the Beatles arriving in the US in February 1964. The molar – which also has its own Twitter following – is currently being considered for the Guinness book of records, as long as it can be cross-referenced with the DNA of a living relative, to ensure its origins.

Botox mum getting some more attention

28-02-2012
Tue

Sarah Burge is no stranger to notoriety, and it seems she’s not prepared to let a few negative headlines get in the way of her controversial parenting techniques; the fifty-one year old has now revealed she’s getting daughter Poppy an £8,000 cosmetic surgery voucher for her eighth birthday. When most children will be looking forward to a toy or a book, Poppy will be educated on the benefits of face-lifts, nose-jobs and Botox injections.

Most parents probably think their children are perfect the way they are, but natural beauty is not something that this Botox-mad mum is satisfied with; ‘It’s empowering for her to be able to take charge of the way she wants to look…. The reality of life is people don’t think they look fine as they are.’

Despite being criticised for her beliefs by the press and public alike, Sarah maintains that she is ‘investing’ in her child’s future, and that the real birthday gift is ‘the freedom to do what she wants.’ The former-nurse told the Mirror that she wasn’t going to stop anytime soon, adding that she would keep getting the vouchers for Poppy on Christmas and birthdays, until she has around £120,000 to put towards any improvements she deems necessary when she reaches eighteen. Sarah also tried to side-step the real issue of inappropriate parenting, with a few words for her critics; ‘People are jealous of my success because I’m creative and fun,’ she believes, ‘the plastic surgery sends them into a wild frenzy.’

Smile4Heroes launches with twenty clinics

24-02-2012
Fri

A new foundation aimed at providing free dental care for ex-service men and women has launched this week in the UK. The Smile4Heroes campaign aims to sign up dentists who are prepared to work with injured personnel for free, rebuilding broken smiles and boosting their self-esteem in the process.

At the moment, there are twenty dentists involved with the foundation, but the organisers are hoping to bring many more in from across the country, to provide free treatment for those injured while serving in the armed forces. The website went live a few days ago, and the campaign can be followed on social networking sites, such as Twitter and Facebook.

Founder of Smile4Heroes, Daniel Pinder, notes on the site that ‘The gift of a smile brings with it an amazing feeling’ and he explains that the aim of the foundation is to ‘offer our injured service personnel the opportunity of having an amazing smile and to help build the confidence of these people in a time when many are rebuilding their lives.’

Mr Pinder went on to say that the intention was to build on the work done by the Defence Dental Services team, and not to replace it, he said they wanted to ‘provide something extra to these people and at no time do I want anyone to think that I don’t feel these people are being looked after, the DDS team provide an amazing service.’

Rugby player talks about orthodontic treatment

24-02-2012
Fri

Newly-married England rugby star Mike Tindall has revealed that he had a little orthodontic help in the months leading up to his wedding to Zara Phillips. Mike, who plays for Gloucester during the rugby season, mentioned his treatment on the Invisalign company’s website, saying that he had refused to have traditional metal braces fitted when he was a child, only to regret the decision later in life.

Invisalign works using a transparent resin shield, which is placed over the teeth in order to gradually move them to a more desirable position – they are often referred to as ‘invisible braces’ because they are barely noticeable when worn. Mike credited the aligners with allowing him to continue playing rugby, as they are completely removable, he also commented on their appearance on his special day; ‘As a full time rugby player I knew traditional braces were not an option but Invisalign allows me to carry on playing sport and you won’t even see them in my wedding photos.’

Mike’s not the only new royal to have recently had their teeth fixed; the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, is rumoured to have had her teeth straightened with lingual braces before her wedding to Prince William – lingual braces are made up of brackets and wires that are fitted to the back of the teeth instead of the front. Other celebrities, such as Kelly Brook and Myleene Klass, have also enjoyed similar treatment.

Dentist prepares for rise in demand for lingual braces

A Yorkshire dentist is bracing herself for an influx of patients requesting lingual braces, as celebrities like Myleene Klass and Karen Millen have spoken about their discreet orthodontic treatment – even royalty has taken advantage of this new product, apparently Kate Middleton wore them in the months preceding her wedding.

Lingual braces work in the same way as traditional metal wires and brackets, but instead of being cemented to the front of the teeth, they are fixed to the back of them, out of sight. The brackets are built to fit on each individual tooth, rather than using a generic design that would fit any teeth, which does mean they are typically more expensive than ‘train track’ braces. According to Megan Hatfield, of Wetherby Orthodontics, patients with lingual braces make up around a fifth of her workload with adults in the area.

Megan commented that people often perceive brace-wearers to be teenagers, and older patients were neglecting dental misalignments because they were worried about how it would look. She also suggested that many people were from a ‘lost generation’ that weren’t offered treatment when they were children. ‘I have treated actresses and those who are in the public eye,’ she said, ‘but most are just ordinary people who have made the decision to do something about their teeth and are willing to pay a bit more for discreet treatment.’

Is Victoria Beckham cosmetically enhanced?

21-02-2012
Tue

Most people who were alive in the early nineties will remember a fresh-faced Posh Spice, who, as one fifth of the UK’s most successful girlband, became a household name – perhaps more for her style and appearance rather than her actual vocal talent. Now, eighteen years after exploding onto the pop scene, the stress of working and taking care of a family seems to have taken its toll on Victoria Beckham – according to the Daily Mail anyway.

The paper has been comparing the 37-year-old to her former Posh self, using an unflattering picture taken recently in New York as evidence for her sudden aging. Harley Street surgeon, Angelica Kavouri, suggested that the changes in her facial structure were due more to aging and lifestyle, and not extensive cosmetic enhancement, although she did comment that she might have turned to injections to keep herself looking fresh, ‘looking at the condition of her skin, I do think that Victoria has had Botox and skin treatments.’ Dr Kavouri went on to say ‘She has no crow’s feet or lines around her eyes, as you would expect in a woman in her late 30’s, so she may have had some Botox here to combat them.’

Victoria’s appearance is not uncommon for females in the public eye, the surgeon pointed out, adding that a lot of the problem was related to weight loss, ‘by staying so skinny, they lose a lot of volume in their face, which is why fillers have become so popular, to make the face look curvier, plumper and more youthful.’

Kelly Osbourne enjoys day off from dental hygiene

21-02-2012
Tue

She’s famous for passing judgement on her peers in the fashion world, but maybe Kelly Osbourne should take a look at her own attitude towards personal hygiene, before criticising others; the 27-year-old tweeted yesterday that she was enjoying spending the whole day in bed, without bothering to pick up her toothbrush and clean her teeth.

The ‘Fashion Police’ regular spent all day lounging around and wasn’t shy about letting her Twitter followers know what she was up to; ‘I hope everyone is having an amazing lazy Sunday! Love to ALL!’ she tweeted, before adding ‘I have a confession… I have spend [sic] the whole day in bed! I have not even brushed my teeth today and I’m bloody loving it!’, and finishing off with ‘#IloveLazyDays’.

When one of her fans later suggested that she should maybe consider giving her teeth a quick brush, to avoid gum disease and plaque building up, Kelly assured them that she would find the time at some point, saying ‘hahaha I’m going to I promise! [sic]’

It seems that the daughter of rocker Ozzy Osbourne earned a day off as she spend Saturday hard at work, also struggling to find the time to eat in the middle of her busy schedule, as she posted ‘Yaaaaaaay dinner has arrived! I have not eaten all day I was having to [sic] much at work and forgot to eat. I’m starving!’

Film star Beckinsale laughs off surgery claims

18-02-2012
Sat

British actress Kate Beckinsale has denied rumours that she has had any kind of facial enhancement, the 38-year-old spoke to Women’s Health magazine last week and claimed that she has had no ‘work done’ on her face or her teeth – despite her smile appearing suddenly flawless and blindingly white. The Underworld star went on to joke about plastic surgery, saying that her sceptics were ‘welcome to look for scars.’

After stepping out at the Golden Globes recently, looking suspiciously well-preserved, Kate maintains that she hasn’t turned to the needle for help keeping up appearances, ‘I haven’t even done Botox.’ She said, ‘Look, I can move my face. But according to popular opinion, I’ve had everything on my face replaced.’ The actress later laughed off one rumour that she had had her chin replaced, saying ‘I wouldn’t know the first place to get a chin.’

Although she claims to have had no cosmetic surgery, the British beauty doesn’t rule out a little nip and tuck in the future; ‘Maybe I’ll start getting everything replaced when I’m 50,’ she said, ‘start at the ankles and work up.’ Kate also commented that she might be able to get money off by using Groupon vouchers, joking that director husband Len Wiseman could get some work done at the same time.

The King’s dental mould up for auction

16-02-2012
Thu

A dental impression of Elvis Presley’s teeth is going up for auction later this month, and is expected to reach at least £10,000, as fans of the legendary singer raid their bank accounts to own what has been dubbed ‘the King’s Crown.’ The mould clearly shows both upper and lower jaws, and also has a spare crown over one of the front teeth, which Elvis kept handy in case he damaged one of his teeth while on tour.

Memphis dentist Henry J Weiss provided dental care for ‘The King’ until 1971 and he prepared the porcelain cap himself, after Elvis cracked his front tooth on a microphone while performing in Las Vegas. The mould comes complete with letters of authenticity from the family of Dr Weiss (his wife and sons) and Joe Esposito, who worked as Presley’s road manager. It is being kept in a glass display case until the auction on the 25th of February.

The auctioneers, Omega Auctions, are becoming regulars with celebrity dental items, after they sold John Lennon’s extracted molar at the end of last year, Paul Fairweather, of the Stockport firm, said that they were ‘extremely excited on the consignment of this truly unique item from the King of Rock and Roll. Whilst it is not a real tooth, as was the case with the Lennon tooth, it is the only one in existence and we expect there to be considerable interest in this.’

Botox company in trouble with industry watchdogs

15-02-2012
Wed

Botox producer Allergan has been found guilty of breaching the UK Code of Practice today, after one of the company’s employees used Twitter to advertise one of their brands. Despite the fact the person in question used their own personal Twitter account to plug the organisation, the PMCPA (Prescription Medicines Code of Practice Authority) ruled that the global company had broken the rules by advertising prescription based medication on the social networking site.

The panel agreed to take into account the fact that the tweet was sent without the knowledge of parent organisation Allergan, and commented that they had been ‘badly let down’ by their employee. It is against company policy to comment on any business activity or advertise any product in a public arena, such as Twitter, but this didn’t seem to stop the activity taking place. Allergan have been told to remind their employees about their online tweeting, and urge them to be careful about what information they make public.

Despite this set back, Allergan have recently been in the headlines for boosting the economy of the small town of Westport in Co. Mayo, Ireland. The company has provided more than a thousand jobs by opening a factory for Botox production, and a research centre nearby, as well as bringing in business for the numerous hotels and beauty salons in the area.
