What To Do About Toothache

What To Do About ToothacheSometimes it can be difficult to know what to do about toothache. Often people may ignore it for a while until it gets worse, or the pain could be that intense that it makes it difficult to function in everyday life. The important thing to remember about a toothache is that it is your body’s way of telling you that there is a problem. Therefore, it is always important to seek dental advice as soon as you notice signs of pain or discomfort.

What to do about toothache?

The priority with a toothache is to seek emergency advice before the issue becomes worse. Your dentist may advise you to monitor the situation or you may need an emergency appointment. If the issue needs treatment then there are things you can do to try and abate the pain while you wait to be seen.

  1. Over the counter painkillers are a good way of reducing the pain of a toothache. These include ibuprofen and paracetamol (dependent on if you are usually able to take these kinds of medications). It is always best to have a discussion with your pharmacist to ensure you take the most effective medication. Please note that Aspirin should not be given to anyone under the age of sixteen unless under the guidance of your GP.
  2. The pharmacy should also offer numbing gels which contain a small amount of local anaesthetic, to help numb the area and reduce the discomfort. This product is not suitable for anyone under the age of twelve years old.
