Easing Toothache

Easing ToothacheWhen a toothache strikes it can often be unexpected, therefore, tips to help manage the pain are helpful. Easing a toothache and the related symptoms is an important step to help patients manage the pain while they seek emergency dental treatment. Here at Pearl Dental Clinic, we offer emergency consultations right up until 10pm every single night. This includes Bank Holidays, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Years Day. That way we are always available to help patients access the fast treatment that they need.

Easing Toothache

Here are some handy tips and advice to help temporarily ease a painful toothache. Please note though that these tips are only temporary measures to help quell the pain while emergency dental treatment is sought.

  1. Rinse the mouth with warm water or salt water to clean away any bacteria. (Only rinse with the solution, do not swallow).
  2. Take over the counter painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. (Only if you are able to take these medications normally).
  3. Applying a cold compress to the cheek can help to reduce swelling and inflammation, and also act as a numbing agent. (Do not apply ice directly to the skin and take breaks from the compress every twenty minutes).
  4. Rub clove oil onto the area that is causing the pain. Clove oil is a natural anaesthetic and can temporarily calm the symptoms of a toothache.
  5. Relaxation techniques can also serve to dull the pain of a toothache by helping the muscles to relax. Clenching the jaw due to pain can end up contributing to it.
