A broken tooth extraction may need a different approach to a simple extraction. If the tooth has broken off in the gum, for example, this makes it more difficult, or impossible, to remove the remaining tooth using normal extraction methods. Therefore, an oral surgeon may perform a special procedure. This is known as a surgical extraction.
A surgical extraction differs from a simple extraction. With a surgical extraction, it is most often performed by an oral surgeon rather than a dentist (however, some dentists are able to do this too). The procedure involves a small cut being made into the gum. Following this incision, the tooth can be removed. Sometimes extra bone from around the tooth will need removing too. Alternatively, the tooth may need cutting in half before extraction. Most surgical extractions will require a local anaesthetic and also an IV sedative. Certain patients, such as children and people with certain medical conditions may require a general anaesthetic instead.
Here at Pearl Dental Clinic, we have an array of specialist equipment to perform complex surgical tooth extractions. Other dental practices in the area often refer patients to our clinic for these types of treatments. The clinic is one of a handful in the UK to use non-traumatic physics forceps. This system is unique because it helps reduce the time it takes to perform the extraction. Also, it reduces damage to the surrounding bone.
